Project description
The Heron Bridge in Ottawa is a multi-span bridge with a total span of 275m and is a dual carriageway. There are separate bridge beams for the two carriageways and both beams have 9 stringers, connected by the deck slab and cross beams.
The bridge was in poor condition and already had some cracks. Repair and strengthening was necessary.
Solution
In addition to the concrete repairs to the bridge deck, the cross beams were strengthened against bending with post-tensioned CFRP plates. The concrete quality at the end of the bridge beam made concentrated transfer of force by anchors impossible. Therefore the compressive force was transferred onto a large area of the concrete through a flat steel plate and a total of 36 StressHead systems were installed.
